The counting of votes has completed in assembly elections of the three North Eastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland on Saturday. As anticipated, Bharatiya Janata Party came forward as a major force in Tripura, Congress emerged as the single-largest party in Meghalaya.
However, BJP is confident of forming the government along with UDP and NPP in Meghalaya. The party has already dispatched Himanta Biswa Sarma to hold alliance talks with potential regional parties whereas Congress has rushed two senior leaders Kamal Nath and Ahmed Patel to Shillong for the same purpose.
Nagaland has always held a rocky ground for the non-regional parties but BJP's alliance with NDPP has ensured their government in the state beating NPF+. After establishing a majority, Neiphiu Rio, who has already won unopposed from Northern Angami-II will be BJP-NDPP's Chief Minister face.
The most shocking results were undoubtedly from Tripura as the 2-decade old Manik Sarkar-led Left Front was beaten by BJP by a considerable margin. Notably, BJP had won zero seats in the 2013 elections and had got less than 2% of the total votes.
As Prime Minister beautifully presently it, BJP's journey in Tripura could surely be described as a voyage from zilch to zenith. Addressing a conference after the result announcement, he said, "The saffron wave has swept the northeast. When a sun sets, its colour is also red."
He didn't spare Congress as well and claimed that the stature of the party has "never gotten as low as it did today". He further mentioned that the historical victory is North East's step towards development. The election in Tripura was held on February 18 while elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland were held on February 27.
